Kevin's Story about Paint By Number Ship Painting:

“Paint by number?”  by Kevin McClintic – February 2011

This is my second trade with Rosalie at bARTer Sauce.  This time, I traded a beautiful, old oil painting depicting a large sailing ship battling huge waves during a storm.

This is the email Ryan sent me the morning after First Thursday

I always like to find out what happens to trades after they leave my hands and I thought you guys might be curious as well.....

Hey,
I don't remember what you said I was suppose to write to you about. Any-whoo, the eye candle that I received- we burned it after artwalk. Then I left it at my friends house. Just wanted to write you before I forgot.
XO
Ryan

Q: Where did you get the glasses you were wearing at First Thursday?

Jamie Trades Me The Mirror of Holiday Death for Lord Bratnose

Jamie came by during the November '09 Art Walk in Pioneer Square. She had just moved into the OK Hotel where I have my art studio. The first time she came by, she had two puppies. The second time she came by, she was a little tipsy and declared that we needed to do a bARTer Sauce trade. Fine by me.

bARTer Sauce normally trades everything that comes through the inventory for something else.

I made an exception once and just gave something away. For charity. Don't judge me. I make the damn rules people. I make the rules.

My friend & ex-roomie Val is involved with SketchFest and they had a fundraiser. I had lots of drinks at said fundraiser.

Laura Trades Me Super Bright Kisses for Jazz Singer Who Tried to Eat Eric's Girlfriend

Laura and Rosalie doin' a Sauce trade

I love the fact that Laura chose the Jazz singer painting as what she wanted for Super Bright Kisses.

To my eye -- they're pretty similar. Same general color scheme. Big lips.

Marlow Trades me Evil Looking Doll Lamp for Vintage Cigarette Coupons

Marlow and JoDavid came to the studio to see Michael Frank's (the Curator-in-Chief of The Museum of Bad Art) presentation on the guildelines MOBA uses to select the paintings for their permanent collection.

Royce Trades me Four Boobed Alien with Dingle for Faux Fossil

Royce came to First Thursday in February 2008 armed with a backpack full of paintings

. At first I thought he was going to give them ALL to me, but then I realized I was just a greedy, little piggy and in fact, he just brought me many OPTIONS. Which is almost as good.

Raffle Proprietor Forced to Trade with The Sauce when I win Eyes, Noses, Mouths, Yep They're All Here painting

bARTer Sauce Trade

During the December First Thursday Art Walk, I entered a raffle to win a painting for $1 on behalf of bARTer Sauce and I won. I rarely win anything. And never on behalf of The Sauce.

It was a special night.

After winning, I realized that I couldn't, in good conscience, enter the painting in The Sauce unless my raffle proprietor took an item off my hands as well. She did. And she couldn't have made a better choice. Maggie's handmade cake toppers have a new home already (I think that's some kind of Sauce turnaround record!).

Octavian trades me a painting called Transition in exchange for The photo of a Naked Chick by my studio partner Kimberly

Rosalie and Octavian making a bARTer Sauce trade

bARTer Sauce struck it rich at First Thursday.

Rich I tell you. Rich. People kept coming in, reading about The Sauce and then going home to get me trades. Hells yes. This is how it's supposed to be. I suppose it helped that I actually printed out the stories that go with each item and posted them with the display. Without those, it's kind of just a big pile of weird stuff for no real reason. Now it has context and makes some sense. Huzzah!

My studio partner, Kimberly, is awesome. She runs Stir and paints silk scarves and ties. And she paints baseball hats with robots on them. Awesome. Robots are awesome!
